What is Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture?
Chinese Medicine has proven to be an excellent modality of healing when combined with western treatments, as well as on its own. An acupuncture treatment is safe, relaxing, painless and free of side-effects. Tiny needles, the width of a hair, are inserted into the body along meridians, or pathways and retained for about 15- 40 minutes, depending on what is being treated. These pathways carry Qi, or vital energy for the body. When we are sick, injured, in pain, under stress, etc, the body's energy can become blocked or "stagnant". The needles help to unblock this energy and restore a natural state of balance to the body, thereby relieving the patient's medical complaint. Acupuncture helps to treat the root cause of a disease, not just the symptom. Chinese herbal medicine can be a valuable addition to acupuncture therapy, and in some cases, a necessity.
What is Qi?
At the root of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that our body contains a "life-force" of energy called Qi (pronounced "chee"). This qi flows throughout our body and protects us from illness, injury and pain. Our health is directly affected by the quality, quantity and balance of this qi flowing inside of us. Qi helps to nourish our muscles, organs, tissues, and every cell in the body. When our qi is at an optimal level and flowing smoothly, we feel vibrant, awake, and strong. We feel balanced on all levels; body, mind and spirit. When our qi is disturbed by blockages of its flow in the body, this can hinder nourishment to different parts, and thereby cause conditions of pain, or illness.
Many things can affect the quantity and quality of our qi. If we are under stress, experience physical or mental trauma, lack sleep or exercise, eat poorly, or overexert ourselves, our qi can become depleted, out of balance or "stagnant". Normally we can bounce back from such imbalances on our own. However, if our qi flow or quantity of qi is disrupted or depleted for an extended period of time, weakness, illness, pain or disease can set in.
